Carrum bushfire 15yo girl charged with damaging home after causing brush fire 20km away.

The girl had been out walking her dog after going in and out of a friend's house when she set fire to what was believed to be a house fire.

Police attended at the site but discovered no one inside the property.

The girl has since been charged with damaging the property and is due to appear in the District Court this evening.

A spokesman said the girl was "being taken into care on Thursday night after the young lady was seen on CCTV vandalising the property which had been a favourite summer spot for her family".

It is understood that the youngster is known to the family but is not known to the authorities.

The boy, believed to be in his early 20s, was not seen by police following the incident on Wednesday morning.

He has been released on police bail.

The council said fire crews attended the fire but the incident had now been extinguished.

The fire service said it had been notified earlier this evening that an item was damaged and was investigating how that damaged the property.

"It's very difficult, very upsetting and has been completely put to rest as it was only a small piece of work for this young lady," Det Insp Dave Palmer told local residents on Thursday afternoon.

The council has also launched a public appeal for information that could help track down a member or the person responsible for the vandalism.

People have been urged to keep to the street, in small groups, if possible, and keep away from the bush, and only leave when they are absolutely sure they are alone.

Any tips will be used to identify the offender.

"We're always aware of the need for support for people who are affected by bushfires," said Det Insp Palmer.

"People should contact us through the telephone 0123 986 5100 or email enquiries@ldapra.org.au.

"We will continue to work closely with local councils in addressing this situation, with additional support from our partners like the NSW Fire Brigade."

The council will continue its appeal to residents for any information they can give, by emailing enquiries@ldapra.org.au or writing to:
